History & lore

Opened in 1789, St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is among New Orleans's oldest extant cemeteries, known for wall vaults, society tombs, and lore surrounding figures such as Marie Laveau. Vandalism and overcrowding led the Archdiocese to restrict casual entry; visitors generally must join an authorized guided tour (or qualify for family visitation). It is a core stop in New Orleans legend tourism but not a free walk-in site.
