History & lore

Opened in 1849 adjacent to the Old Dutch Church burying ground that appears in Washington Irving's 1820 tale The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The landscaped grounds hold the graves of Irving, Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, and other notable New Yorkers. The cemetery is open to individual visitors during posted daytime hours; organized groups need permission. Guided walking tours are offered seasonally by the cemetery.
