About

Radial 19th-century penitentiary preserved as a historic site and museum; hosts the large seasonal Halloween Nights event.

History & lore

Opened in 1829, Eastern State pioneered the Pennsylvania System of solitary confinement in a fortress-like radial plan. It held well-known inmates including Al Capone and Willie Sutton before closing in 1971. Stabilized as a ruin-museum, it offers daytime historic tours year-round and the major seasonal Halloween Nights haunted attraction. Haunt lore grew from the site's reputation and media coverage; the nonprofit emphasizes both preservation and Halloween fundraising.
