About

Victorian cemetery on a bluff above the Wilmington River, famous for sculpture, live oaks, and its role in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

History & lore

Bonaventure began as a plantation burial ground and became a public cemetery known for elaborate monuments under moss-draped oaks. John Berendt's book and the subsequent film brought international attention to sites like the Bird Girl statue (now in a museum). City cemetery gates are open daytime; the Bonaventure Historical Society operates weekend visitor info. Night access is restricted—ghost-tour companies run nearby narratives, but the cemetery itself is a daytime public burial ground.
